:pokeball:Picture based on a roleplay with :iconyxa4evr: which I have posted below for you to enjoy! This is probably my favorite contest we've done!:pokeball:

Ash and Dawn had been in Fuchsia City for going on three days. Dawn's next Pokemon contest was coming up very soon.

Each night that they had been there, Dawn had snuck out of their room at the Pokemon Center to practice a secret appeal that she had been planning for a long time. She thought of it way before she had even started contests in the Kanto Region, but this was something that would take a ton of practice.

She didn't want to show Ash this appeal until she knew she was ready to use it. But he couldn't see it just yet. Oh no. She was planning to wow him and the judges on the stage the next morning.

Usually when Dawn came back to bed each night, Ash was still sound asleep. She didn't know, however, that he was actually awake this time, and most likely wondering where she had gone! She stood out in the hallway by their bedroom door and began whispering.

"Alright... You were great tonight. I really think you've got this down! I'm ready to show everyone what you can do tomorrow. It will be just like old times!" Just like old times? She must have been planning something similar to a contest in Sinnoh...

Or was she?

Ash had had a little bit of trouble staying asleep that night. Fortunately for dawn, he hadn't caught onto anything she'd been planning just yet. He whined as he turned over in their bed, having a hard time sleeping. "Man... Where did Dawn go..?" He lifted his head when he heard her muffled voice. What was going on out there..?

He could hear some sort of response from the Pokemon, but it was hard to pick out the sound of the Pokemon's voice. It was a bit too quiet.

"I think everyone will be really surprised with what we came up with! Don't you?" Another response. Dawn chuckled. "I know! I'm so ready for tomorrow! I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight!"

Dawn heard Ash's footsteps and gasped. That's when he heard, "Hurry! Get back in the ball! He doesn't know about you. I can't let him see yet..." Doesn't know about you? What was she talking about?

Dawn called the Pokemon back and turned to face the door as he opened it.

'Doesn't know about.. Can't see you yet..' What was she talking about? Ash raised an eyebrow, waiting patiently as if to hear more, or speak to her directly. She sounded excited about something, but he couldn't make out just what.
"A-Ash! I...umm what are you doing up so late?" She hid the Pokeball behind her back.

"I can't seem to stay asleep... What about you, Dawn?"

"I was just...ya know...taking a trip to the bathroom..." What? That didn't even /sound/ like a good lie. Good one Dawn. She faked a yawn. "Well why don't we get back to sleep now, huh?"

"...I guess so, sure. Just remember, you have a contest tomorrow." He scooted over, giving her room to hop into bed.

"Believe me...I haven't forgotten." She shot him a smile and curled up next to him, and soon fell asleep.
He shrugged off the confusion and snuggled up to her, soon doing the same.

The next morning Dawn was up way before Ash. She got her hair and make up out of the way by the time he had gotten out of bed. As he opened his eyes she was just stepping back into the room wearing the same purple dress as she had worn to all of her contests in Kanto.

"Morning, sleepy head!" She kissed his head and sat on the edge of the bed.

Feeling the pleasant kiss on the top of his head, he stirred a bit, opening one eye, only to see Dawn fully prepared. She looked gorgeous. "Mn.. Morning, Dawn.. Lookin' good.." He smiled up at her, starting to stretch.

She blushed a little. "Thanks. You'd better start getting ready! I have to be there soon!" She ran her hand through his hair.

He closed his eyes a little, enjoying the contact. "Mn... Right. I'll be up in a sec!"

"Alright.." She giggled, giving him the time he needed to get ready.

A few minutes or so later, he was fully dressed and prepared, holding a sleepy Pikachu in his arms. "Alright! You ready to win this thing?" Ash held his hand up high.

"More than ready!" She laughed and happily high-fived him. "Lets go!!" After the high-five, Dawn took that hand in hers and ran with him out of the Pokemon Center and to the contest hall. The two of them stood backstage together as the waited for Dawn's turn to arrive.

"I'm guessing you've got something planned, huh..?" He stood backstage, eagerly awaiting whatever she'd kept hidden for the past few days.

"You bet. It's going to be...amazing. I'm so proud of--err...this appeal." She couldn't give it away. Not just yet...
"I'm sure you are. Knowing you, I know it'll kick their butts." He smiled cheekily, giving her a pat on the shoulder.

"Guess you will have to wait and see, huh?" It was finally to the contestant that came right before her...and she was starting to get Butterfrees. Calm down, Dawn... It's going to go just fine...

He could see she seemed a bit nervous. He slightly tightened her hold on her shoulder. "Hey... You're going to do just fine, alright?"

She looked at him and nodded. She was more worried about what he would think of this appeal. She was hoping with would bring back memories for him, just as it had for her even just rehearsing it over and over.

He was already sure that it would amaze him, even exceed his own expectations. He gave her a kiss on the cheek before starting to walk for the stands. "Remember; No need to worry!"

"Right! No need to worry. You're going to love this Ash!" She called as he walked off. "I hope..." She mumbled to herself. She pulled out a Pokeball and looked down at it. "I hope you're ready for this." She walked out on the stage.

Ash slipped into the front row of the crowd, eagerly awaiting her appeal. Dawn was up... This was going to be good. He could feel it.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then glanced at Ash in the stands.

He smiled warmly, giving his girlfriend a thumbs-up. She could do this.

She smiled back and nodded. When she was told to begin she took her ball and tossed it in the air, using the catchphrase she always used back in Sinnoh. "Spotlight....Piplup!"

"Spotlight..?" That was her old catchphrase she used in Sinnoh. Wait a second.. Piplup!? Something was strange here... She was planning something, wasn't she. But what..?

"Alright, Piplup, Bubblebeam!!" The small penguin jumped and spun around so that he was facing the coordinator, and fired the Bubblebeam.../right/ at her!!

The crowd looked on in confusion. Had she messed this up? Was the Pokemon disobeying? People in the crowd began to whisper. Ash simply watched on in interest. Prinplup wouldn't do that... Nor had he somehow magically devolved. Dawn would have told him even if he had. She had to have something planned.

The bubbles started to surround her until she was no longer visible. Beneath the bubbles was a small flash of light, that faded soon after. Just what was going on?

Everyone stared in awe, their mouths hanging open. More whispers could be heard. What the heck was going on!?

Each bubble popped one by one, and there was Dawn...but she was now wearing her old Sinnoh Contest outfit. Not only had her clothes been changed, but so had her appearance. She almost looked...younger. The audience members were too focused on Dawn to notice that the arena also looked different. Some how they had been "transported" to a contest hall in Sinnoh.

There were whispers about how this must be some sort of magic or illusionary work... But no one in Kanto knew of what could be causing it... Except for Ash. "Man... You really went all out on this one, didn't you." He smirked, crossing his arms. A few people near him seemed to peer at Ash out of curiosity. Did he know something?

From there Dawn began to showcase some of Piplup's old moves. Moves that Prinplup sure didn't know anymore. How was she doing this? That was her little secret.

The audience was now watching the appeals, Dawn's sudden change in the back of everyone's minds. The judges were the only ones who had noticed the background change. It was quite a phenomenon, that was for sure. Ash simply watched in interest. Knowing Dawn, she had some grand finale planned.

Oh she definitely had a big finale planned. At the moment Dawn was really enjoying the little flash back of a previous contest, and at one point glanced back at Ash.

He looked right back at her, giving her another thumbs up. Pikachu imitated him. It was like a flashback... How nostalgic. 'Do it, Dawn.' He mouthed. He was ready to see where this went.

She flashed him a smirk. Here it goes. "Okay Piplup...ready for our big finish?" The Piplup had a real determined smile and nodded. The penguin got down on all fours and somehow managed to do a Night Daze attack. How was this possible for the Piplup? This was no ordinary Night Daze, either. The attack completely filled the stage, and Piplup and Dawn could no longer be seen under the dark glow. With a flash it was all gone. The arena was back to its normal state, and Dawn was back to her old self...with Rura on her shoulder.

People gasped and watched don in pure shock as the appeal went through. What was that Pokemon on Dawn's shoulder..? What had it done? What had just happened!? After a full ten seconds of silence, the audience erupted into loud cheers. Ash smiled, nodding his head a bit with his arms crossed. "Incredible, Dawn. Just incredible."

"...I'm not sure quite what that was, but everyone put their hands for a marvelous performance by Dawn!" The main judge announced, which followed many cheers and claps from the audience. Ash stood up, clapping loudly. She'd really blown the audience away. He was proud.

Dawn smiled widely with the applause she was getting from this. She wasn't the only one who was excited, Rura was just about overwhelmed with the praise of what he had done. They both smiled at each other and giggled. Dawn waved to the audience as she made her way backstage. She lifted the Pokemon from her shoulder and gave him a huge squeeze. "We did it!!! You were amazing!!!"

Ash made his way to rush backstage, quickly making it over to Dawn as Pikachu dashed beside him. His eyes lit up, his smile was wide. "Dawn! Dawn, that was amazing!" He ran over, pulling both her and Rura into a hug.

"Ash!!" She returned the hug tightly. She had tears in her eyes. She was so proud of just how well it had turned out.

"I didn't even see that coming... You were incredible! You too, Rura!" He pat the Zorua's head. Pikachu ran up to congratulate them as well. "Pika Pikachu~!!"

"We've been working on it since before the Viridian Contest. It took a /ton/ of practice to get it just right. Rura was pretty insecure about his illusions and even had trouble getting rid of his tail when turning into Piplup. Just like that Zorua we met back in Sinnoh when he would change into a human." She chuckled. "But every night we would sneak out and practice until he could get it just right... He's really come a long way since we started it, Ash. You have no idea!"

"Hey Pikachu!" She reached down and picked him up, bringing him into the hug. "What did /you/ think?"

Pikachu put his paw in the air, chanting happily. "Pika! Pikachuuu!" He loved it!

"Dawn... I really had no idea. And you kept that a secret the whole time!?" His eyes were wide. "You're... You're incredible. I dunno what to even say about it." He hugged her tightly, full of pride. "You're going to be Top Coordinator one day. I /know/ it."

She hugged him tight. The tears really started to flow now. Just hearing those words... This contest was meant to remind her of one of her very first, but she has changed so much since then. "It means so much to hear you say that, Ash."

"I mean every word of it. You should be proud of it. I bet you have the whole contest hall in amazement now! We're the only ones who get it... It was a really genius move."
"You really think so? I got the idea from the Zorua we met back then. I just had to try it, but I wanted Rura to be ready." She wiped her eyes and smiled at him.

He reached to wipe another tear, more than proud of her. "...Yeah. I really do. You take a lot of stuff into thought like that. That's great for a coordinator. Perfect, even. I wasn't even part of this one."

"You were...you just didn't know it."

"What do you mean..?" He tilted his head slightly, reaching to pet Rura on the head, who happily nuzzled his hand. He was very, very proud of himself.

"I was mainly focused on..." She blushed a little. "...impressing you. I just /had/ to make this one perfect. I did this one all for you. You were my inspiration, Ash..."
"...Really?" His cheeks went red. She really did this... All for /him/?

She smiled and nodded. "Really..." She pet Rura's head. "Just ask this little guy." She chuckled. Oh he knew. It was all the talked about when they practiced!

Rura nodded adamantly. 'Uh-huh~! All she did was about how she loved her Ashy-washy.' He snickered telepathically.

Ash couldn't help but chuckle. He knew Rura was teasing.
Her face went red and she rubbed the back of her neck. "Something like that..." She chuckled, embarrassed.

Rura snickered more. "Good observation, Rura... In any case, you were both wonderful. I'm sure Meema'll be proud, too." He made note to get a copy of this contest on tape. It would likely have all of Kanto talking, as far as contests went.
